What is Pediatrics at UMC?

Pediatrics is a specialized field of medicine focused on the health, development, and well-being of children and adolescents from birth through 18 years of age. The pediatric team at UMC in Lisbon provides comprehensive care that includes routine wellness visits, vaccinations, early diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment of acute and chronic conditions. Pediatric follow-up is especially important during the first year of life.

We design our pediatric visits to be calm, child-friendly, and age-appropriate. Our consultation room is set up with a playroom atmosphere to help reduce anxiety and make examinations more comfortable for babies, children, and teenagers — as well as for their parents.

Our pediatricians combine international clinical experience with strong communication skills. We know how to build trust with infants, school-age children, and adolescents. Many young patients receive a small “bravery reward”, helping them form a positive relationship with healthcare from an early age.

Our goal is healthy children and confident parents. When needed, your pediatrician remains available after the visit to answer follow-up questions, adjust the treatment plan, or guide home care.

When should you see a pediatrician?

Regular pediatric check-ups are essential for early detection of problems, monitoring development, and building healthy habits. Families come to UMC for reasons such as:

  • Well-child visits: monitoring growth, weight, head circumference, growth percentiles, and motor, speech, and cognitive development.
  • Vaccinations: administration of vaccines according to the Portuguese National Immunization Program and international schedules, including individualized vaccination plans.
  • Acute and chronic conditions: respiratory infections, allergies, asthma, dermatitis, gastrointestinal issues, and recurrent illnesses.
  • Medical documentation: forms and medical certificates for daycare, school, sports, and other activities.

Prevention and child development

Modern pediatrics is not limited to treating illness. A major part of our work focuses on prevention and developmental follow-up. We work with families to build healthy routines, nutrition, sleep, and a positive attitude toward health.

Our pediatricians diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Acute respiratory infections: COVID-19, influenza, bronchiolitis, and other viral illnesses.
  • Bronchitis and pneumonia: evaluation of severity, treatment planning, and follow-up.
  • Infectious diseases: chickenpox, measles, and viral or bacterial gastroenteritis.
  • Allergic conditions: food allergies, allergic rhinitis, and skin reactions.
  • Gastrointestinal problems: diarrhea, constipation, colic, and possible food intolerance.
  • Developmental concerns: motor delay, speech delay, learning difficulties, and school adaptation issues.
  • Chronic conditions: asthma, diabetes, obesity, and atopic dermatitis.
  • Pediatric dermatology: rashes, eczema, skin infections, and insect bite reactions.
  • Adolescent health: acne, menstrual cycle issues, sleep disturbances, nutrition, weight management, and emotional well-being.

Rapid tests and same-day diagnostics

UMCL offers point-of-care testing during the visit, allowing for faster diagnosis and treatment decisions:

  • Strep A rapid test: quick diagnosis of streptococcal throat infection.
  • Rapid influenza test (Influenza A/B): detection of flu viruses.
  • COVID-19 rapid test: quick screening for coronavirus infection.
  • CRP (C-reactive protein): supportive assessment of inflammation.
  • Urine analysis: screening for urinary tract infections and other conditions.
  • Bilirubin assessment: monitoring neonatal jaundice.
  • Heel prick test: provided at no cost as part of newborn follow-up.

When indicated, we refer children for ultrasound examinations performed by dedicated pediatric imaging specialists.

Have questions about pediatric care at UMC Lisbon? Our team of experienced, caring pediatricians is here for your child — from newborns to teenagers. Find answers to the most common questions below.

Q1: What makes UMC Lisbon's pediatric department different from other private clinics?

At UMC Lisbon, pediatrics is more than routine check-ups. Our experienced, deeply caring pediatricians go beyond medical care — they make every visit feel safe and comfortable for your child. Our dedicated pediatric room is fully equipped and thoughtfully designed so kids aren't scared and parents feel at ease. After vaccinations or blood draws, every child receives a small gift. We also have a full team of pediatric specialists in-house — including an ENT, gynecologist, surgeon, dermatologist, and ultrasound — so your child gets comprehensive care in one place.

Q2: Do your pediatricians speak English?

Yes — all of our pediatricians, nurses, administrators, and call center staff speak English and Portuguese fluently. Many team members also speak French, Spanish, German, and other languages. You'll always be able to communicate clearly with your child's doctor.

Q3: Can a pediatrician come to our home?

Yes. All UMC Lisbon pediatricians make home visits throughout greater Lisbon, Cascais, and Sintra. If your child is unwell and can't travel, or you simply prefer the comfort of home — especially with a newborn — we come to you. Home visits are available for both urgent needs and routine care, including newborn patronage visits.

Q4: Do you offer online pediatric consultations?

Yes. UMC Lisbon offers online video consultations with our pediatricians for follow-up visits, general health questions, reviewing test results, and guidance on feeding, sleep, and child development. Available for families across Europe and beyond.

Q5: Do you vaccinate children, and do you follow the standard vaccination schedule?

Yes, we vaccinate children of all ages. At UMC Lisbon, we also vaccinate outside the standard mandatory schedule — including travel vaccines, additional recommended vaccines, and catch-up vaccination plans for children who have missed doses or moved from another country. We create fully personalized vaccination schedules tailored to your child's history and needs.

Q6: Can you help with newborn care — breastfeeding, bathing, sleep?

Absolutely. Our pediatricians provide full newborn patronage visits at home. We support new parents with breastfeeding guidance, swaddling, bathing, safe sleep routines, and introducing solid foods. These visits are designed to give new parents confidence and peace of mind from day one.

Q7: Do you do blood tests and lab work for children at the clinic?

Yes. UMC Lisbon collects blood samples and other lab tests for children every day. Our team is experienced in making the process as quick and gentle as possible, so it's as stress-free as it can be for both child and parent.

Q8: What insurance do you accept for pediatric visits?

We work with a wide range of international and Portuguese insurance providers, including AXA, Cigna, Ensuria, International SOS, Viscura, Fidelidade, Multicare, Medicare, Medis, and many others. Self-pay families are always welcome — please contact us for current pricing. We recommend confirming coverage with your insurer before the visit.

Q9: Can you issue medical certificates for school, kindergarten, and sports?

Yes. Our pediatricians issue all certificates required for school enrollment, kindergarten, and sports sections. We also translate and apostille vaccination certificates — essential for families relocating to Portugal or enrolling children in international schools.

Q10: Do you have annual pediatric programs or check-ups for children?

Yes. UMC Lisbon offers annual pediatric programs and age-specific health check-ups for children at every stage of development. These programs make a wonderful gift for new and expecting parents — covering everything from the first weeks of life through childhood. Ask our team about current packages and what's included.
